Better than thin

I know I have talked A LOT on my blog about weight, body image and beauty issues… The reason I do is because obsession with it is RAMPANT in our society. Yes, I believe there are many unhealthy people, obese people, overweight people that could BE heathier. I am not saying that is healthy, because it isn’t. That is not treating the body the Lord gave us with respect.

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We were created in GOD’S image!!! God is perfect. God is the beautiful Creator who took time and pride in His creation. Throughout creation, it talks of the Lord saw what He made and it was good…. and MAN was his GREATEST creation.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

What I want to RE say today, as I am sure I have said it before, but us women NEED a reminder. We need MANY reminders. Being TOO thin and having an obsession with “skinniness” is JUST as dangerous, if not MORE so, than having a little extra weight. READ HERE Our society is obsessed with extremes. Shows such as Biggest Loser help those on ONE extreme, obesity. However, modeling shows, reality TV, etc, magazines about celebrities and them being “fat” even though they are FAR from it drive our society into the other extreme…. TOO skinny. Unhealthy weight loss. Eating disorder skinny. There really should be a show helping women suffering from eating disorders or extreme body image issues. This show could help women see how beautiful they are, how to be healthy, the RIGHT way, and how not to obsess over the scale but rather over health. We are all made different. For some being a size 4 is ok, for some, it would be WAY too skinny for their body type.

I struggled with eating disorders. It was not pretty. I have always been petite. I have never had the 6 pack or perfect hips, etc that I “see” in a magazine (remember they dont either! its called air brushing!!!!). I thought I was “fat” and I bought into the lie. I starved myself, over worked out, then when I did eat, I pretended it made me “sick” and I would go purge. Yes. It was bad. I am so thankful for friends, my husband, and my family who pulled me out of that terrible place before it was too late.

Ladies… PLEASE. I understand if you want to be healthy. That is GREAT. The Lord God wants us to be that was well… but being healthy has NOTHING to do (at least mostly) with what size your pants lining says. It is a way of life. It isn’t about what the scale says either. If you have a problem with obsessing, I BEG you.. THROW AWAY THE SCALE!!! Smash it with a hammer. Burn it. DO SOMETHING. Having that wil only allow Satan to draw you deeper into that lie, into that cycle. THAT is not healthy. THAT is not what the Lord wants. THAT is not biblical and it HURTS the Lord. I really believe that!

There are SO many verses about body image, outward looks, etc…

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:13-16

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”1 Peter 3:3-4

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

It just makes me laugh because many years ago skinny wasn’t beautiful! Marilyn Monroe!!! I just googled and saw all these old magazine covers about women who WANT to put weight ON!!! Our society is sad, and focuses on all the things the Bible warns us to stay away from. However, the theme running througout society, in all the years, is the fact women can’t be happy with the body they were given.

I could add more… think about it… if we are OBSESSED with thinness, the size we wear, the number on the scale, whether we have the perfect hips, breasts, thighs, if we complain all the time about our post baby bod… is that glorifying to God? If we are unhealthy (too skinny OR too fat) are we TRULY able to fullfill Ephesians 2:10? How can we do the good works God prepared for us to the best of our ability if we are always distracted by weight and appearance or are unhealthy?

You can’t. Yes, wanting to be healthy is ok… BUT obsessing over it isn’t. In fact, I believe is is sinful. It can be arrogant. Selfish. Prideful. You are taking focus of Jesus Christ and putting it on yourself. Keep your focus on Christ and HE will direct you, in ALL areas of life… even health.

When I struggled, a dear friend told me wise words… “Strive to be healthy, NOT thin”

Being healthy is BETTER than thin. Keeping focus on Christ is BETTER than thin. Doing all you an to be healthy then accepting and loving your body for HOW is was made is MUCH BETTER than thin. Do you want thin? Or do you want BETTER? I think I will take better…
