on being “open-minded”

Earlier today I posted this status on Facebook:

Something I have been pondering: I’m always a little concerned/confused when I hear Christians say they are a “Christian, but they are an open-minded Christian.” What does that mean exactly? Sure, if you wanna be open minded about choice of diet (gluten free, paleo etc), that God uses each of us different, that we could learn a new way to minister that works better than what we are doing, what type of music at church, what you should wear to church, etc etc etc… but many times I think those who say they are open-minded are going against scripture in what they are open-minded about. Christians, we can be open-minded about certain things, but we CANNOT claim Christ and then say we are “open-minded” about things that clearly go against His Word. — “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” Matthew 6:24

This post may get me in trouble with certain people, probably the “open-minded Christians”, but oh well. I cannot sit by and watch devoted followers of Christ be torn apart, berated, called hateful and judgmental, and spoken rudely about anymore. I cannot watch while those who are trying to follow the Word of God and His commands (of course we all fail daily, we are not perfect and will not be made perfect until the day we die and meet our Savior face to face) are made to look like THEY are wrong and all this open minded nonsense is what is ok and it is “what Jesus would do” because, you know, Jesus is love, and all flowers and rainbows and unicorns.

Yes. Jesus IS love. The Bible says they will know we are Christians by our love… but we forget something. He is also holy. He is just. He will also bring judgement. He will also show his wrath for those who denied him on this Earth. They will be eternally separated from Him in Hell. And Hell, my friends, is the farthest thing from flowers and rainbows and unicorns. God IS love, yes, but part of that love is telling us the truth. He wants the BEST for us. His commands are not to zap our fun away, it is to protect us.

We are ALL sinners. We all mess up daily! Hourly! We lie, get too angry, get impatient, take the Lord’s name in vain, etc etc. My point is… we are ALL sinners.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live, how old you are, how young you are… we are all sinners and we all need a Savior to forgive us, heal us and restore us to a right relationship with the Father. That person is Jesus. Jesus is THE only way…

Therefore, in order to love someone like Jesus, we HAVE to share truth. We CANNOT be willy nilly about Christ. We cannot be “open-minded” on things that go against God’s word. The Bible says:

“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! 16 But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” Revelation 3:15-16

Some believe that all god’s are the same. There is more than one way to heaven, but that is a lie and one we must share the truth on for people to truly come to Christ. We cannot be open-minded on this matter. If we are, it is dangerous.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

There is NO other way to heaven except through belief in Jesus Christ. We must repent, turn to him and seek forgiveness. It IS a free gift.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

Another issue that we cannot be open-minded on is the Trinity. Our Lord is THREE persons, ONE God. We cannot waiver on that. We cannot deny the Trinity. Jesus Christ is God’s son, and Jesus is fully God. We cannot deny that either. He isn’t just a good man, a prophet. Satan has many slight twists of truth out there that people follow. Some other faiths will say they believe in the Bible, God, and Jesus Christ, however… it is NOT the God of the Bible (they use the same vocabulary, but a different dictionary, as some put it). Some of these do not think Jesus Christ was really the Son of God. We MUST believe this in order to come to Christ. It is a non-negotiable. We must be truthful to those we are sharing the Gospel with on these matter. That is PART of the Gospel.

Another issue that our culture seems to deem OK, even if you are a Christian is: sex outside of marriage/living together before marriage: The Bible refers to this as fornication, which, according to webster is: consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other: Read here for many verses against fornication

Everyone struggles with sin or tempted by or bent toward certain sins. My biggest struggles are I am bent toward worry and wanting to control. We all sin. Daily. Hourly. The good news is we have a Savior who will forgive ANY and ALL sins! His sacrifice on the cross was and IS enough! You can be forgiven if you repent and come to Him!
