I came across THIS picture on facebook today. I LOVE it. I need to paint it. I need to paint like 50 of them of so I have one staring me in the face at every turn. I need to put scripture on it as well that talks about how we should not have worry about what man thinks, or worry about doing what God has called us to do, because you see, who God calls (and yes, motherhood is one of those callings) HE will equip.
The caption under it said the following:
Good moms breastfeed.
Good moms formula feed.
Good moms vaccinate their kids.
Good moms don’t vaccinate their kids.
Good moms co-sleep.
Good moms use cribs.
Good moms have hospital births.
Good moms have home births.
Good moms adopt.
Good moms have natural births.
Good moms have epidurals.
Good moms have c-sections.
Good moms have 10 kids.
Good moms have 1 kid .
Good moms use cloth diapers.
Good moms use disposable diapers.
I always see moms putting each other down over these things all the time. I’ve even participated in it. But I’ve realized that an intelligent, loving mother can consider the same facts as you and still come to a different conclusion. I know we’re all only human, but let’s learn to respect each other.
Can I just say I agree! AMEN! We mothers are all made differently. We all have things we are good at, things we struggle with, things we are passionate about, things that don’t matter as much to us, etc etc etc. We need to STOP tearing down. We need to build up. We need to stop condemning and belittling those who don’t do it “our way” because who made us god? Who says that OUR way is the right way!? All mothers will parent differently. We are all required to look to the Lord, read His Word, and follow Him in motherhood, yes, but you see… SOME of the things in motherhood we do will manifest themselves differently for different people. That is OK. I have seen SO many issue in which people tell other parents they are sinning if they do this, don’t do this, use this, don’t use this… I want to be like STOP! WHY!? Why are you harming the body of Christ? Why are you tearing down fellow mothers? The job is HARD enough without those who should be our allies, treating us as if we are evil, wrong, or the worst mother on the planet simply because we don’t do things THEIR WAY.
Do you think that this attitude pleases God? I can pretty much say with confidence that I am pretty sure it does not!
This reminds of of the passage in 1 Corinthians 13. We, as Christian mothers, are required to LOVE. Jesus gave us that command. He was pretty clear about it.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39
SEE? Therefore the 1 Corinthians passage applies to us. That applies to how we treat EVERYONE, including other mothers. Guess what one of the verses say in the “love passage”?
“Love is…. not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way” 1 Corinthians 13: (end of) 4-5
So moms. Let’s stop tearing down. Let’s stop insisting on OUR own way when it comes to motherhood. You cannot play god in other mothers lives. You cannot know what the Lord has told another mother to do in what situation. You cannot know their heart or their convictions. Motherhood is NOT about us. It is about Christ. It is about God. It was never about us… so stop making it that way.
